Sustainability Plan
In 2015 the sustainability commission launched a public process in order to create a sustainability plan for the City of Athens. The final draft of the plan was presented to Athens City Council on March 13, 2017. The plan is designed to support local sustainability initiatives and to encourage both residents and the city administration to move towards sustainability. Greenhouse Gas Inventory
The City of Athens completed a greenhouse gas inventory during the Summer of 2022 to analyze and create a baseline assessment from 2019 data. In summary, the City of Athens produces 5.3 metric tons of CO2 per capita compared to the National average of 19.9 and State average of 21.2 metric tons. The City would average 6.3 metric tons if not part of an electric aggregation program. The City is a leader statewide and nationally as one of the lowest producers of greenhouse gases.
